MY PROFESSIONAL RÉSUMÉ

Overview

I started learning English at age 7 in Rio, as I have always been fascinated with the language and culture. After getting my Bachelor's degree, I ventured into working with it, first as a translator and later on as a tutor/instructor. My clients varied from publishing and pharmaceutical companies to adult individuals and couples with diverse goals - professionals who wanted to advance their careers, students, or people wanting to deepen personal bonds with English-speaking family members and friends. In the 90s, I came to the U.S. to further my studies and eventually decided to embrace it as my country, becoming a proud citizen. Being a bicultural and bilingual Brazilian-American gives me a broad view of the world and a unique advantage in tutoring English and Portuguese.

I also received my certification in Life Coaching, when it was time to expand the ways in which to help people. I use my personal experiences and resilience – which allow me to relate and empathize with others strongly - to hopefully make a difference. As a 50+ woman, I have gone through several types of changes throughout the years: the early loss of a parent, immigration, motherhood, divorce, remarriage, and career shifts and branching - all significant patches of my life quilt. I offer Coaching in English or Portuguese - and that can also be a fantastic way to practice Conversational language too!

Methodology and Philosophy

There are different methods in language learning, including

Grammar and Translation

Direct or Natural

Communicative Language Teaching (CLT)

I prefer to avoid labeling my tutoring style, as I like to use elements of all approaches in my classes, instead of rigidly adopting one over the other. Tutors and students have diverse personalities and strengths, therefore I try to connect with the person and take their needs, skills, and pace into consideration. That's one of the main advantages of private tutoring.

With that said, CLT is a great approach I like to use, but grammar is also an integral part of my programs. It is a foundation that can give reassurance and confidence to learners who are using a new language - at any level. Of course, conversational activities are just as important - it is the balance of all different methods that facilitate the learning process.

MY PERSONAL RÉSUMÉ

When you are over 50, experience can come from exploring different roads.

They find space to grow roots and intertwine.

I can only tutor and coach because I am a lifelong, avid learner myself.

I am a proud mom, wife, daughter, sister, aunt, friend.

My world of people and seeking growth is what makes me feel accomplished, connected, happy.

It all starts with my family. First and foremost. Always.

Other passions? You bet!

I have a certification in Professional Photography from NYIP and I have worked for a couple of years with studio and stock photography. I am also certified in meditation, a resource I may use in my classes, depending on the student's preferences. I love traveling, reading, going to the beach, and listening to 80s music. Yes, I have dated myself several times here, as I do not hide my cool GenXer status.
